Minister Amna Al-Rumaihi said that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning immediately upon receiving His Highness’s directive, may God protect him, activated the executive plan for preserving the historical and cultural identity of Bahrain’s buildings and cities, launched the Muharraq city development plan, and formed work teams to begin the steps for the actual implementation of the plan in several stages in coordination with the relevant authorities. .
The Minister stated that the action plan aims to preserve the fabric of the city’s urban heritage, and to create visual harmony between its heritage and modern buildings, through the use of contemporary methods for the architectural elements in the city of Muharraq, noting that a guideline for reconstruction in urban heritage areas will be launched, to preserve the identity of the city. The city of Muharraq, and the guide includes a number of engineering and artistic models inspired by the ancient architectural character of Muharraq, including buildings, roads, and alleys, that reflect the original historical fragrance of the city, in addition to the design controls for reconstruction, the controls for the designs of building facades, and others related to infrastructure and designs. The Minister reviewed the components of the action plan, which includes developing areas in the city of Muharraq within an area of about 1.4 million square metres, in addition to preserving buildings of heritage value and completing the Pearling Path by restoring 16 buildings of heritage value, which will be used in cultural and tourism activities. The plan will also work To increase the green area in the region and diversify its afforestation, by providing 72 green squares with an area of up to 12 thousand square meters, and planting 100 thousand trees in them.
She added that the development plan also includes developing traffic and pedestrian corridors with a length of 48 square kilometers, provided that the development plan includes providing parking lots to accommodate residents and visitors to the areas.
The plan also includes providing housing units that meet the aspirations of Bahraini families who plan to return to live in the city of Muharraq. To this end, housing units will be implemented and restored for future projects in cooperation with the private sector, with a total of units reaching 2,000 units, of which 300 units will be implemented and restored in the first phase of the plan. Work will also be done to develop infrastructure services and facilities within the scope of work in the city.
